Sales Saturday: Go Team!

As an Indie author marketing can be hard, and no matter what you do it can feel like you are working against an impenetrable wall of thousands of other Indie books, some of which, where put out there by people who just decided to hit the magical “publish” button. It’s frustrating to see a book you’ve read and know is riddled with errors surpass yours. Even more frustrating to watch some of the things that hit the shelves by major publishers. I know that sounds arrogant, but there’s a little green eyed monster inside of us all, isn’t there? The thing to NOT do is sit there and just think about those “ideas” you have in your head. The thing TO do is to keep pushing forward and think of more things to do to put your novel out there. Keep emailing bloggers, Facebookers, and tweeters, most of all keep writing and formulating bigger and better marketing plans. A marketing plan is the key to a proper roll-out of a novel, and while it will never guarantee you become the next Jessica Sorenson, Colleen Hoover or Jennifer Armentrout, it puts you ahead of the game because it allows you to measure what you’ve done and what you can do better. Marketing plans can evolve, and very often times do, due to the element of “measuring failures and successes”. As I looked at falling numbers of sales for Love Exactly I realized that I needed to find a unique way to increase numbers on a novel when it was reaching the end of it’s cycle. (We’ll talk about the book life cycle another time). I currently run an independent author support group on Goodreads called the FBI (Fabulous, Bold, Indies), and after interacting with many other authors that are also struggling in the Indie world I took a step back and looked at the group and it’s reasoning.

I began the support group because of the slush of author groups that I’d seen that were only a means of promoting one’s novel. This is great–we need that, but we also need other support–somewhere we can talk about the difficulties of marketing, writing, editing and the publishing world.

Then I thought–why not utilize both of these things to test the theory of “The Power of the Team”. I’ve been a supervisor for some six plus years (which doesn’t sound impressive, I know, but I’m also only 24), and I know the power of working as a team–and the effects of a floundering team. As authors we are independent vehicles; every single one of us is working against the other–pushing, shoving and sometimes kicking, one another aside to get a piece of the “sales” pie. I stepped back and looked at my sales career. At my day job I’ve had to be a strong team player, but I was also a strong independent seller. I’ve learned through my career that both of those things CAN indeed go together. So, why can’t they go together in the publishing world? I think they can, and to prove that I’ve teamed up with a handful of other great (struggling) authors to put on a “Fall in Love with Reading $.99 Sale”. Feeling Bookish??

I am, you know why? I’ve just received The Booker Award from amazing mystery-sleuth writer, Lada Ray. I’ve only read one of her novels, but I have the rest in her series, and when I get some time I can’t wait to read them! The Booker Award is an award just for authors, and it prompts us to tell our readers about our top five favorite novels, and then to nominate another five of our fellow authors.

Shakespeare: Taming the Shrew

Now, I can say that pretty much anything by Shakespeare is right up there on my list, but I wanted to expand on this specific one.  (By the way, that copy to the right is one very old copy from my best friend’s library, which I just happen to live right next to…) This particular play shows Shakespeare’s sense of humor, and coupled with his other plays shows how well rounded of a writer he was. I really enjoyed this, and I am sure you will too.

 

 

 

 

 

Jane Austen: Emma AND Pride & Prejudice

I cannot pick a favorite Jane Austen novel. She is my favorite all time writer, and all of her novels are my top five. What I love about Emma, is really what a lot of people hate about it–Emma’s being so very pig headed. Another reason I love it: the movie adaptation with Johnny Lee Miller (have you seen him in Elementary?? You should watch it!). Why I love Pride and Prejudice? I love everything about it. It teaches us a lesson about our preconceived notions, about arrogance and pride and well, it ends wonderfully!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Emily Bronte: Wuthering Heights

This novel took me almost a year to read, and honestly, nothing ever takes me that long to read. It wasn’t because the novel was bad, it was extremely long and it’s content was extremely dark. None, none of the characters are likeable, each of them is flawed with so many demons that the fact that they exist is implausible.  The reason I love it so much is the way that it’s written–the lines…Here is one of my favorites:

‘I know that ghosts have wandered on earth. Be with me always — take any form — drive me mad! Only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh, God! It is unutterable! I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!’

 

 

 

 

 

 

When it came to the last novel, you would think I would have had a hard time, and you are probably guessing it’s going to be another classic, perhaps Chaucer? Nope, this was the first novel that came to mind after the others. I can see it as a classic, and I can see the scenes as fresh in my mind as I did when I first read the novel.

Ellen Ekstrom: Armor of Light

I can gush about this book for hours. The way it’s written? Superb. The lush medieval picture that is painted with gorgeous description that is just enough to keep your own mind thinking…and the story line–the twists that you never see coming! I can see this as a movie right now, and while I first thought Jude Law–I’ve decided he’s too skinny, too willowy–now, Johnny Lee Miller, he would do just fine! I am very lucky to say that the author of this novel is one of my close friends, but I assure you that has nothing to do with my opinion on this novel.

Beautiful Photography for the Beautiful Blogger Award

This morning I was greeted by a lovely message from Sonya Loveday that nominated me for the beautiful blogger award. I have received this award once before, but it was awesome to get it again. Now, for this award you mention the person who gave it to you, list seven fun things about you and nominate 15 other beautiful bloggers. Here’s the thing, I am overwhelmed right now, and I am not afraid to admit it. I have 13 days until Walking in the Shadows is released, and I am working my hardest to get everything together for the blog tour and the release signing. In between press releases, making advertisements, interviews and guest posts I have a ton of other stuff going on. Next week I have to go to training for my licensing exams for life insurance. Oh, and today I got word my college finally sent my finals, and I have to take them extremely quickly. Guess when??? HALLOWEEN. The RELEASE date. So, I also have to pound out a three hour exam for Nutrition, Anatomy, and HIM Ethics before coming home and plopping down to do some marketing and internet spreading…So, what I mean to say is: I don’t have the concentration to nominate 15, but I think ALL of you are amazing bloggers and have beautiful blogs, so consider yourself nominated! To go with the 7 fun facts I am also including some of my beautiful (I hope) photography from Canibeat’s First Class Fitment 2012 in Princeton, NJ last weekend.

FACTS:

1. I always wanted to be a ghost hunter, and I was told today that I look like the new girl TAPS just hired. My twin is living one of my past dreams.

2. I am a complete klutz; when I was a child I was nicknamed “Crasher” because of my tendency to run into things. I still do, yet I can dance, figure skate, and ride horses without a problem…mhmm.

3. In my house we have a rabbit, two cats, and two dogs.

4. The first thing I painted was an Iris for Christmas for my Dad in 2008. I sat down in front of the TV and just decided to paint. It came out pretty awesome, and I have been selling my art since.

5. I can paint flowers, that look real, but pretty much anything else–not at all.

6. My favorite color is pink.

7. I have an unnatural obsession with penguins. They make me squeal…a lot.
