“You realize,” Tad began as he pulled into my parking spot at my apartment, “that I’m not going to let you stay alone tonight.”
“What if someone sees your car is still here in the morning?” I asked, but I didn’t want to fight it. I needed him.
“We’ve gone over this before,” he reassured me, his eyes locked on mine. “My friend will vouch for me.”
“You mean lie for you?”
“He knows about us, Vera. It came out in conversation when he asked why we broke up and why I’d been so moody or whatever,” Tad explained, his hand warm on my back.
“Really? I made you moody?” I asked, opening my apartment door.
“Depressed is more like it.”
“Join the club,” I replied, sliding his jacket off and handing it back to him. He stared down at it with his lips in a stern line.
“I wish I was a more admirable boyfriend to you. I would much rather be that than your teacher.”
“I enjoy your teaching…but I do enjoy you being my boyfriend more. It just can’t be,” I replied, and his response was silence so I continued, “I should go change. You want your pajamas?”
“Wait—did you get to slow dance at all?” Tad asked, and I shook my head. He fiddled with his phone before putting it down on the coffee table and holding his hand out. “May I have this dance?”
“No, we shouldn’t. You should go home…it’s too hard to have you here and then tomorrow I’ll be in your classroom again as your student. It’s so easy for you to go from here to there,” I whispered, my voice trailing off.
“You have got to know…” Tad cried out, throwing his hands up. “You have to know this is not easy on me either. I see you almost every day as my student, and I have to fight myself…who I really am—you know it. You’re so sensible about this whole thing, everything, you’re just so strong. I wish I could be like you and forget all the pain.”
“It’s a farce Tad, I’m not strong. I feel like there’s a train heading straight towards me. You were what kept me stable—let me forgot the past I’m running from. I can stand this every day class thing because you take the pain away…even if you’re only my teacher,” I explained, shaking my head as I took in his distress.
“You know what the real farce is?” he whispered as he pulled me into his arms. “That I’m only your teacher.”
I let him kiss me; let the nights events wash away from my mind and let the shadows remain shadows. Tonight I would forget what I was running from even though it was closer than it had ever been, for I knew I was safe in his arms.

NEW ADULT POST – APOCALYPTIC ROMANCE SERIES
In 2021 the world as we know it changed. The government collapsed, and the worst characteristics of human nature were shown as the world fell into ruins. Years after The Fall, the Tribes that were established are still at war. They still fight to keep what they pillaged, and most of all, they fight to keep their lies a secret. In a world filled with deception, nothing is as it seems.
I was born into this world.
Hunter Marks was molded into this world; a General— a person cold and harsh. A person meant to kill me.
We were told to just believe.
We were taught to never question.
We’re supposed to be robots, and accept our roles in this altered society.
Too bad Hunter and I don’t follow the rules.
And we’re a hell of a lot stronger than they ever thought possible.
They’ve been searching for the world’s deadliest weapon.
And I’m not following the leader any more.

COMING SUMMER 2014

The woods flashed past us as he ran, holding me tightly to his body so I barely felt the movement. When we reached our training field Hunter put me to the ground, his breath a whisper against the night sky as he walked past me.
When he turned to face me his arms were crossed across his chest, and I felt my chest tighten. The stars reflected in his eyes as his body was framed perfectly against the moonlight and snow. I had never seen the ocean, but I imagined the way the stars reflected in his eyes was the way they would look over the water; shimmering despite the endless depth beneath.
I nodded at him, and he began to demonstrate a move to me. I watched in wonder as his movements barely caused the snow to crunch. All I could hear was the hammering of my heart in my ears and his breath as his he stepped forward to help me position my body to repeat his actions.
His hands gently slid up my arms as he showed me how to position myself to strike, but his hands stopped at my shoulders. I could see it in his eyes; he didn’t have the heart for fighting tonight. He wanted the peaceful farce the forest gave us just as I did. His thumb caressed my collarbone and his jaw tightened as my chest rose against his palm.
Hunter looked up at the sky, and the stars reflected there even deeper before he closed them, lowering his head to mine.
His eyes opened as his lips curled softly at the edges, and then, in one swift movement he slid his arm behind my back and pulled me to the ground with him.
Our bodies melted into the cold ground, and I placed my head on his chest as we stared up at the stars without saying a word.
For that moment, we let the farce take us over.
And for a moment, I believed all we needed was this feeling.

Hunter nodded. “Can I take a peek at your ribs?”
“Sure,” I replied, slipping my shirt off over my head.
I looked up at him as innocent as possible.
He swallowed and then placed his hands gently on my torso causing goose bumps to travel in a visible line up my skin.
“I’m sorry if my hands are cold,” he replied, and his breath washed over my bare neck, causing the tingling sensation to spread.
I looked at the ceiling as my heart began to race. I wanted to control my body’s reaction to him, but at the same time I didn’t. I relished the heat that flushed through my veins at his touch and the mere thought of his eyes wandering over mine so exposed.
“No, they’re fine,” I replied, breathless as our eyes met again.
“They seem to be healed quite well,” he said, and his hands remained on my skin, causing another rash of goose bumps to race across my flesh. “The fractures were minor, so I didn’t expect it to take long. I’m sorry I had you doped up so long—I didn’t realize they were healed so well.”
“So when can we start training again?” I asked as I tried to keep my mind away from the thought of his hand slipping just a bit higher to loosen the back of my bra.
His lips made it hard to concentrate as they parted.
“Tonight if you want.” Hunter let his hands drop into his pockets. “As long as you start cooking again.”
“For sure…your cooking sucks!” I replied, taking my shirt from the counter and slipping it back on.
“Tell me about it!” He laughed, but the tension between us still hung in the air as we stood staring at one another.
I took a deep breath and gave him a smile. “So, what would you like?”
His tongue ran over his lips and he blinked a few times before his hand went to his neck.
“Umm..whatever you’d like to cook.”
