The Great Hunt had great promise, from the intriguing description to the pretty cover, but for me, it ended up being ‘meh’. The overall plot was what really made this way for me, along with the burdensome description and lack of balance between prose and dialogue. I get that fantasy tends to have a bit more descriptive, but all of it just felt meandering. There were too many characters to fully flesh out, and in the end, they all began to feel the same. Handsome, muscular, beautiful, brave — but nothing about them really stuck out. Then there was not what I would call insta-love, but insta-attraction then followed by superficial love. I just didn’t buy any of it and in the end, there was nothing too special about any of the characters, the story or the world building and the characters lacked any substantial growth. It all just felt meh for me. I’m not sure if I’ll bother reading the second novel because I never became engaged enough in any aspect of the book to really feel the need to continue. Overall, the description promised a heart-wrenching adventure, but the story failed to deliver anything memorable.
