New Adult Contemporary Romance | Novella

Charlie Jennings and Jhett Hudson knew that a single moment could change everything.

It took them one song to find each other, one question to give them a chance, one kiss to fall in love, and one night to almost lose it all. But they had one thing other couples lack—pure, unconditional love—and that takes more than a moment to walk away from.

Falling in love is only the beginning. Forever is what happens next.

I narrowed my eyes. “So tell me. Was I worth the wait?”

Jhett raised his eyebrow and pulled me closer to him; pressing his body into mine and expertly tipping me back. I squealed in surprise as he held me in his arms, my head falling as he dipped me. “You’ve always been worth the wait.” Leaning forward, he pressed a teasing kiss to my lips. I wanted more. The butterflies were back flying around in my stomach again. The things that man could do to me with just a single kiss.

Bringing me upright, he kept one arm wrapped around my waist and led our slow steps with his other hand intertwined with mine. He flashed me another boyish smirk and sighed. “You’re happy tonight,” he said; coming out as more of a statement than a question. I felt all fifty shades of red hit my cheeks in record time and nodded. There were no words to be said because he spoke the truth. I couldn’t argue with him. I was happy…finally. “I missed you, Charlie.” Sadness tinged his hushed words.

When I looked up into his deep brown eyes, I wanted nothing more than to take all the pain I caused away. He didn’t intend to make me feel guilty, I knew he wouldn’t do that, but I understood the meaning behind his words. He missed me because the Charlie he knew got a little lost inside herself, but I was back, and I wasn’t going anywhere now.

I rested my head against his chest; the muffled sound of his heartbeat barely audible over the band. I still couldn’t find the words to answer him.

He pressed his warm lips to my forehead and lingered there for just a few seconds longer than usual. “Do you want to get out of here?”

1) Originally Promise Me This was supposed to be a single novel, what made you make the decision to make it a series? I had big plans for a second book and a third novella. I didn’t feel like Charlie and Jhett’s story was over at the end of Promise Me This, and I wanted to continue sharing what I could with readers.

2) I noticed you changed the novel from a full length novel to a novella, what made you make this decision? After six months of attempting to write said second book, everything I tried didn’t feel right. My original plot line felt like I was being untrue to their relationship and I didn’t think it was fair to put them through Hell and back AGAIN just to fill a whole book. It wasn’t an easy decision…but it was one that had to be made to stay true to my characters, myself, and to my readers as well. They deserve a great book and what I had wasn’t great at all.

3) What’s easier, writing a full-length novel, or a novella, and why? HAHA. Neither! Just kidding. I think a novella may have been tougher for me and only because I am a very descriptive person and want to include every tiny detail. But in order to keep the story moving I couldn’t. Which is why there’s about 20K words of “LOST SCENES” that can be found in the back of Promise Me Forever.

4) Do you feel like Promise Me Forever is the conclusion you were looking for? I really do. It was always my goal to write this part of their lives for my readers…I didn’t plan on it being so soon, but I’ve always known what their forever would be like. It may not be the last we see of any of the characters, but for now, it is what it is. That’s all I’m saying. 🙂

5) If you could do one thing different with the series, what would it be? I don’t know if I would do anything different. Maybe write a little faster so I wouldn’t have to make people wait so long for book two? But the struggles I went through writing Promise Me Forever made me a better writer, so I can’t say I would change that.

6) What and who are the Fierce 5? Oh, My #Fierce5. They’re a group of super awesome lady authors that have become my family over the past year. We are made up of Mindy Hayes, Starla Huchton, Michele G Miller, and C.L. Foster. Most of us met at UtopYA last year, except I went to Middle School and High School with Mindy. We weren’t close, but she found me when we both signed up for IndieGirlCon and we clicked instantly. Michele and I have been writing partners since Promise Me This was still in the baby stages, and we met Starla and C.L. at UtopYA and just…formed this amazing support group and then it became a friendship and then finally a family. We are each so different and unique, but we work. We have a 24/7 open Facebook group chat and I know they are always there for me.

7) You’re a successful Indie, any advice for those out there looking to publish? Ha! Well shucks.  Thanks! I would say, you have to figure out what you want to accomplish with your writing because that is how you have to determine success. Do you want to make money, do you just want to release your work and be done with it, or do you want to create a partnership with your readers. Personally, I write for myself, because these stories will just not leave me alone. But I always write to talk to other readers, who sometimes end up being my readers, and THAT is super cool. I love social media for that purpose alone. I can connect with people all over the world about the one thing I love – books! It doesn’t matter if it’s mine or someone else’s. So that is my advice. Decide what you want to get out of publishing your work. And when you know – make it happen.

8) Are you interested in being published traditionally? Honestly, not really. The thought never crossed my mind when I published Promise Me This. One of my #Fierce5 sisters queries, and the process did interest me. But I am a control freak and I don’t think I could relinquish control over my work and myself. I like being my own boss. 🙂

9) What’s next for you? I’m working on a new genre right now – Adult Suspense. It’s called Rebel Souls, but has been dubbed Project Grit as a nickname because, well, it’s dark and gritty. It’s nothing like I’ve ever written before and I’m loving every second of it.

10) I noticed the cover models for this novella are different than the original models, who are these models? It just came down to scheduling conflicts. I was pressed for time to get my cover done and we just couldn’t make things work. It totally bums me out…but I love both covers so much. I can’t complain in the least!
