Music Monday: Ouch!

Or, should I say, Hurt by Johnny Cash. It fit my mood today…

And then I read this about Walking in the Shadows: “This is my first time reading a book that she (ME!) wrote and it completely shocked me by how good it was. I will, of course, reread it in the future and keep it on my cellphone at all times.”

I still love Hurt because it just makes my whole body and being yearn to write.

SONG: Hurt

ARTIST: Johnny Cash

CD: The Legend of Johnny Cash

GENRE: Country, Rock and Roll, Gospel

LYRICS:

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

ANALYSIS: The second this song starts playing my whole body tingles. I have a physical and emotional connection to this song. I was playing my Deftones radio the other day and this came on. Only Johnny Cash’s haunting voice could draw this reaction from me, tears prickle in my eyes and every part of me burns to write, to type out those feelings. I’ve heard the original by Nine Inch Nails and sorry guys, it doesn’t play me the same way. What’s more the video can consume you all the same…watching him sing. If he was still alive, I could just sit and watch him play and sing forever. Johnny Cash lived a full life with passion, pain, regrets and happiness…and it reminds me to do the same even if it hurts. Just as he sung every note, plucked every string; I will type each letter, feel each word, create each moment with the passion that it is as much a part of me, as his music was a part of him.

He bent the bars with music and let their souls fly free.

  1. Hurt is a great song! It’s actually by the Nine Inch Nails. Johnny Cash covered it, and I believe he said that he wanted to show that music went beyond genre. I love this cover and listen to it constantly, it makes me want to write, too 😀

That is such a great thing to read from a reader! Congrats on the great compliment 🙂
