Perfection in Silence

One of my co-workers is an avid reader, so naturally she was interested in reading my first novel InBS. It’s nerve racking to have someone you know read your book, as if they don’t like it then there is going to be a very awkward conversation that follows. I look forward to honesty though and inside me my stomach was jumping when I finally got the guts to ask her if she had started reading it yet. She said she had just started and hadn’t gotten far enough to really get an idea. Now I must add that this person is an honest person, and wouldn’t sugar coat a thing.

I went out for my lunch today and when I returned she was sitting in the break room with my book in her hands and she was engrossed in it. I have to say I had to take a deep breath as she looked up at me. Her eyes met mine and a grin spread across her face. That’s when I knew I had gotten to her. She shook her head and just said “Cassie,” with that smile. She didn’t say anything more, but finished the chapter and put the book down. She took a deep breath and said “I hate being an adult, I just want to go home and finish reading your book.”.

It’s awesome to get a good review online, but to walk into a room and see someone reading my book and just look up with utter intrigue was amazing.

Later on I was standing beside her using the calculator and I looked up to see her staring at me smiling. It was a bit creepy, but I asked her what she was thinking about. “Your book,” She explained her eyes narrowing, “I think I know what’s going to happen and I can’t wait to see if I’m right.”

It was like an epiphany. Now I do know that not every response is going to be like this, but it was pretty awesome. I hope all authors who really have a passion for writing at least get to see one response like this. It makes it all worth it because writing isn’t all roses.

Deep breath, smile,  “Cassie.”

  1. I only hope I get to experience this with my own book. Awesome! (Incidentally, I have a copy of your book and will be starting it this weekend)
